Drawings

by Sihaya Hopkins

I am one of those people who drew every day of my childhood. My father had a big drafting table in our kitchen and I had a mini one next to it. I also had a tote bag with the essentials of life. It was filled with paper, colored pencils, pens and snacks, topped with a sweater. It would travel with me to the dentist waiting room or any rooms corner where I might spread out on the floor and get back to work. Now days my pattern is so similar. Only the big bag has simplified into an iPad.

New Mexico wildlife, landscape, sky & flora.

I moved to New Mexico a few years ago. It’s the third point to a triangle of environments I’ve lived in. First I grew up in Alaska, living in south central as a child and then the wilderness of Prince William Sound as a teenager. For stories about living in the Alaskan Bush see my Blog page. Next my family moved to the coast of Maine. I became a glass artisan with a studio fine craft gallery, Blossom Studio on the Blue Hill Peninsula. After 25 years my brother, mother and I moved to Santa Fe New Mexico and began to experience the Southwest.

The biggest themes of my life have certainly been a love of nature and an appreciation for true wilderness. In Alaska I experienced the world with a thriving ecosystem and had the privilege of living within the wild. On the coast of Maine what remains of the wild is the ocean, the water, wind & sky. Now in Santa Fe I am often struck by being wilderness adjacent. Seeing Jackrabbits, Roadrunners, Coyotes and hawks on my daily walks. Every evening we walk our dogs before bed and visit our neighbors the Great Horned Owls, who raised two big fluffy chicks this year. Here my environs are vast landscapes with surrounding mountains and the big, big sky!

My work

I would say my aesthetic is simple & elegant with a real enjoyment of color, on a theme of wild nature. I daily appreciate my modern life with its bright and airy new built apartment, my beloved poodles and things that seem basic like plumbing. Which I grew up largely without. But there is nothing so enriching as contact with abundant nature and I love that my work keeps my finger on the pulse of life with that view. I would like you to enjoy my works in this way too. Adding a silk scarf to your daily apparel or a throw pillow to your living room that says, isn’t it amazing that we share a world with Great Horned Owls and deep blue skies!

Jewelry

When I began to create works in fabric it was a little challenging to pull away from the 25 plus years of a focus in jewelry. I’ve enjoyed stringing necklaces that complement the colors in my scarves and my studio supplies still include mountains of beads. Then one day I realized that unlike glass, which has a weight and size limitation for earrings, fabric weighs practically nothing. It was now within my power to create statement earrings!

Looking for my glass work?

There is still a pretty healthy inventory over at my Etsy shop Blossom Studio. In addition since retiring from glass I’ve lowered the prices by about 20% on what remains. A little parting gift.

Thank you everyone who loved my work for so long and so well. You’ve blessed my life. 💛
